Effective Solutions for Gum Disease

Statistically, 80% of the nation suffers from some type of gum disease. This painless, progressive infection is responsible for the majority of tooth loss in American adults. Tooth loss is not the only danger of gum disease. The following conditions are also related:

  • Heart Disease and Strokes
  • Dementia
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Low-weight births

Problems that can stem from gum disease can be held in check by proper oral care and regular checkups. Dr. Layton can help determine if early stages of gum disease are present, and provide solutions to get your mouth back to full health.

So what is gum disease?

Decaying food particles along with harmful bacteria, within the mouth, promote the start of a gum infection. Gum disease is generally due to hardened oral plaque buildup, which irritates the gums. As the bacteria grows, tissue around the gums and teeth begin to separate and create gaps that promote further infection and plaque buildup.

Treatment for gum disease begins by removing the plaque and treating the affected area with antibiotics. When the infection is under control, the tissue begins to heal and the gaps retract, forming a healthy seal back to the teeth. To avoid gum or tooth loss, or even worse, deterioration of the jaw, a visit twice a year with Dr. Layton can be your best defense against gum disease.
