Gum Disease

Gum Disease Causes Whole-Health Problems

Are you one of the 80 percent of people who have some form of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease? This painless, progressive condition is responsible for most of the tooth loss in American adults. It has also been linked to heart disease, strokes, dementia, osteoporosis, diabetes complications, and low-weight births. Good oral healthcare and regular hygiene visits can deter gum disease, but if we find that you have gingivitis or another stage of the disease, we will offer therapy to bring your mouth back to full health.

Gum disease is usually caused by hardened plaque that irritates gums. Bacteria in the mouth and decaying food particles contribute to the onset of a gum infection. Once bacteria begin to grow, gum tissue separates from teeth to create pockets that harbor infection. Our hygienists may recommend scaling to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line, root planing to smooth rough areas on teeth roots where plaque tends to build up, and antibiotic therapy to eradicate infection. Once the infection is stopped, gum tissue can heal and reattach to teeth. However, left untreated, gum disease will cause gum recession, tooth loss, and bone deterioration in the jaw.

Don’t let gum disease catch you by surprise. Mild symptoms like painless, bleeding gums or slight tenderness and swelling may be the only signs. Call Dental Images for an appointment with Dr. Layton. We’re located in Oklahoma City, convenient to Warr Acres, Bethany, and Mustang.
